Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our town is a border town, one in which its economy is based on agriculture and light industry.

Our district's pre-k through eighth grade migrant students are resilient, strong, young individuals who are in need of educational resources to help them overcome language and academic challenges.

All five of our schools in our district qualify for Title One funding. Eighty-three percent of our student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch and half of our students are English Language Learners.

As a Migrant Advocate, I have the privilege to serve K-8 migrant students in our district. Our students, whose parents are migratory agricultural workers, often move during the regular school year from one school district to another, to accompany their parents or legal guardians seeking seasonal agricultural employment. Due to their mobility and lifestyle, migrant students face unique challenges including adjustments to new school settings and classroom routines, differences in curriculum and academic standards and access to equal academic enrichment programs or activities. Even though our migrant students face such social and academic challenges, they are eager to come to school every day to learn new things and be successful in school.

My Project

In order to help reduce the educational disruptions and achievement gap that result from constantly moving due to economic necessity, our Migrant Education Program is committed to providing our students with equal access to enriched educational opportunities and experiences.

Last school year, we introduced our students to the exciting world of robotics and this year, we are in need of rechargeable batteries and additional LEGO pieces/elements to complete our kits so students can build larger models and learn how to program them.

The LEGO robotics program incorporates three main components, the development of core values, basic coding skills, and LEGO building skills. In addition to facilitating the development of students’ language, math and reading skills, learning to code enhances children’s confidence and encourages them to solve complex tasks and real-life problems in a creative way.

While many migrant parents value the education of their children, they may not always know how to provide a learning-rich home environment. We teach our students to be proud of the hard work their parents do as migratory agricultural workers and the important role they play in our town’s economy. Yet, we want to inspire and encourage our students to dream of a brighter future. Students are learning that while pursuing a career in STEM related areas they can still follow their families' footsteps and contribute to our community’s agriculture industry by becoming food scientists, irrigation engineers, or water and soil scientists. By developing critical thinking and problem solving skills early in life, students become effective problem solvers and gain a sense of personal empowerment and individual ingenuity. These skills spread across all areas of life and in every career choice.
