My Students

I am a middle school Language Arts and Social Science teacher who has been working with inner city students for over a decade. My absolute passion is to work with this age group, covering these subjects, and to motivate these amazing kids.

I teach a third of all the students at my school (I see over a hundred students on a daily basis).

I work in a low-income area in Chicago (97% of students receive a free or reduced lunch). Despite the obstacles they may have, these middle schoolers have so much gumption and personality, that I truly look forward to working with them every day. My frustration, however, is that these students are falling further and further behind, but demands and expectations are getting higher and higher for them to be college and career ready. With 70% of my students being English Language Learners, and 30% of my students being Special Education Students (known as Diverse Learners), having the ability to use technology and resources is the key to helping them achieve.

My Project

My students need a MacBook laptop, 3 Kindles with chargers, multiple copies of 2 novels, a folktale book, a poetry book, pencils, 3 pencil sharpeners, an electric stapler with staples. My junior high students will greatly benefit from the supplies, novels, and having technology in the classroom! With the laptop, we will be able to research projects and type papers. With the Kindles, I can have small groups read books according to their reading levels. Exposing them to those classroom resources will allow them to continue to work hard in this digital age. With copies of the novels, a folktale book, and a poetry book, small groups will be able to conduct Literature Circles and add post-its in the books to track their reading. Also, (although not very exciting) school supplies are always needed, such as pencils, 3 pencil sharpeners, an electric stapler, and extra staples. All of these items will be used with one purpose in mind: my goal is to inspire students to love learning, and to enhance their literacy!

With these materials, my classroom will be able function more effectively and more efficiently.

My students will reap the rewards from this project. I can only help students truly achieve success if I have resources to do so. Please help! It takes a village!
