My Students

Middle School is hard enough as it is. My students are at a critical age in their development and growth as young people in a densely populated, quickly changing community disproportionately affected by the global pandemic. Several students have lost immediate and extended family members to COVID-19. Over 80% of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and over 15% are in temporary housing which is 10% higher than the city average. While my students continue to overcome many hardships in their daily life, they express themselves through art and create building blocks for expansive, bright futures.

My students are brilliantly intelligent, creative problem solvers, and forward thinkers.

Throughout the year, my students create personally reflective artwork about their lives with zines and comics. They design posters and t-shirts for Black Lives Matter, and respond to other ongoing movements for environmental and social justice. My students find comfort and joy during times of stress and anxiety through drawing and painting.

My Project

My students are deeply aware of the social and political issues that surround their daily life.

Art of Protest is a beautiful publication that will offer my students an age appropriate background on the importance of art in social movements, a clear definition of protest art, examples of youth leadership and protest art around the world, and why protest art is relevant beyond today.

De Nichols' handbook is a direct reference that provides her personal, relatable story as an Artivist which will inspire my students to lead changes for a better world.
