This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been a general music teacher in a metropolitan school district for 13 years, and for the past 4 years I have been fortunate to teach at a middle school. I am excited to provide students with opportunities to express themselves through music at this challenging and critical age when students have so much potential, creativity, and curiosity.

I am dedicated to teaching and to providing my students with opportunities to create, compose, and improvise on classroom instruments and using technology.

In my general music classes I teach over 320 students a year. Students are in grades 6-8, and range in age from 11-15 years old. Ninety-seven percent of the student population identifies as Hispanic, and ninety-eight percent of the student population is low income. Students participate in musical activities ranging from electronic composition, performing, improvising, and composing on guitars and ukuleles, to world percussion where students learn to play music from the Caribbean and Africa.

My Project

My middle school music students have the opportunity to belong to an afterschool Rock Band; in this band students play modern rock and pop music on the electric and acoustic guitars, ukulele, drumset, keyboard, and vocals. Students also perform for the school community.

However, we generally have 2 to 3 microphones in our Rockband and the PA stem that we currently have isn't powerful enough to handle their voices.

The PA system currently in the music room only has 1 microphone input, and even when I run the extra microphones through a mixer into the PA system it isn't loud enough to be heard over the band. I am requesting a more powerful PA system with 2 microphone inputs so both singers can be heard over the band, and their vocal parts can individually adjusted.
