My Students

Every teacher calls their group of students “special” and they are in whatever way that teacher says so. I believe my students are special because they will be the first group in my lifetime (their lifetime) to soldier through an entire school year of English language arts during a pandemic. I have worked in my building for over a decade. Therefore, I can say I have seen and known my students since their first year as kindergartners. I remember seeing them squirm down the hallways, saying hello to me and shouting my name. The kindergarten teacher and I share the same last name and this of course tickles the kindergartners every year. In fact, this teacher would bring them up to the 3rd floor as an in-school “field trip” to visit the big kids upstairs. They would enter my classroom and maze through the tables and chairs eyeing my seventh graders at the time, amazed at how big they were. To see them now approach my “classroom” as the 2020-2021 seventh graders is exciting and quite remarkable. They are funny, excitable, curious, and intelligent just as they were six years ago. They are my students.

My Project

As a teacher of ELA and a lover of all things theatrical, colorful and dramatic, I am confident that using this iPad to teach will not only bring my lessons to life but it will also engage my scholars and encourage them to become lifelong readers. The ultimate purpose of reading is to learn, understand, and enjoy. Having this updated technology is sure to create all of those things. Students will be able to learn challenging concepts through various 3D apps and simulations, giving them an experience and opportunity to conceptualize ideas that would otherwise prove to be unrealistic in traditional instruction. I can integrate documents, PowerPoint like slide shows, videos, and images into presentations. During lessons I can do real-time drawing, writing, and animation providing an interactive experience. When I am reading aloud a text, I am able to circle, highlight and write in important points during my lesson or presentation. This tool will also help me to be more efficient. Grading, arranging, and filing is right at my fingertips. It will allow me to promote my love of books in ways that draw readers in and will also allow me to conduct uninterrupted high-quality lessons using features such as multitasking between apps and spaces, the tool pallet, sketch apps that allow me to sketch and then embed immediately on a document, as well as the sign in with Apple feature that allows me to sign in from any Apple device no matter where I am. And because I can project the iPad’s screen for students to see, they can interact with this product as much as I can. Since I will be on the go moving from classroom to home, this product is certain to improve my teaching and just as importantly, enhance the learning of my students.
