My Students

I teach middle school science, math, and computer science to students in grades 6, 7, and 8 at SMS in Wrangell, Alaska. We live on an island in Southeast Alaska with a population of about 2000. My students love to learn about local science, play basketball, fish, hunt, and go on adventures on the nearby Stikine River.

My Project

Our middle school students benefit from daily breaks outside. The middle school students enjoy a short 10-minute break every day. They get fresh air, exercise, interact with their peers and play games during these valuable and important breaks. Many students love to throw a frisbee, invent their own games using small bouncy balls or play fun racquetball games. The problem is that we are lacking good sports equipment that can be used outside during the break. Currently, students are using my personal sports equipment that I borrowed from my own children. I would love to have equipment that is accessible to all students in middle school. My hope is that they will also use this equipment during their lunch break. Research has shown time and time again, that students benefit tremendously from moving their bodies, getting fresh air, and engaging in play.
