My Students

I teach middle school science, math, and computer science to students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in Wrangell, Alaska. We live on an island in Southeast Alaska with a population of about 2000. My students love to learn about local science, play basketball, fish, hunt, and go on adventures on the nearby Stikine River.

My Project

I would like every math student to have access to the same tools to help them have more success in math. I ask students to purchase calculators, however, several students are not able to make this happen, often for financial reasons. Middle school students also struggle with remembering to bring tools such as a calculator to class. By purchasing a class set that will remain in my classroom, every student will have access to a simple calculator. Class time will no longer be wasted looking for calculators because they will be safely stored in my classroom.

Students LOVE to show their work on mini-whiteboards in math.

Using a whiteboard instead of paper is not only good for the environment but also motivating for a student. It also makes it easy for me to quickly check their work and provide immediate feedback. I would like a class set of whiteboards and markers so that each student can access these tools on a daily basis.
