My Project

Hello! My name is Izabella Battaglia, I am currently the 5th grade classroom teacher at Hellenic Classical Charter school in Brooklyn, NY. I have been the 5th grade teacher for 5 years! Next year, will be my first year moving up to 6th grade ELA. I will be looping with the current 5th grade and I would love to set them up for success by providing them with an abundant classroom library.These books will elevate the level of learning in my sixth grade ELA classroom, not only next year but for years to come.

A diverse classroom library is crucial to grow the love for reading in middle school.

My students are a hardworking, funny and creative bunch. They all love to learn and grow their knowledge about past social issues, as well as current ones. The books on my list are some of the very popular ones, however we never had enough copies for book clubs. These sets of books will help me create social issues book clubs that will engage the class to grow an understanding of different cultures, backgrounds and problems characters face. A lot of students will be able to connect to these characters and relate to the books on a deeper level.

Reading and writing go hand in hand, loving reading will help my students grow as writers as well. Being able to expand my classroom library will be very beneficial to the 6th graders, their first year in middle school.
