Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in East Harlem, we were struck by the COVID-19 pandemic heavily. Our students missed a full 2 years of face-to-face instruction and completely lost the privilege of socialization.

Our school is a high-ranking Middle School within our district.

We strive to offer the best high-quality education to our scholars. Nonetheless, the majority of our students are from the East Harlem community. More than half of them are from low-income households and lack some necessary resources and support to live a healthy and happy lifestyle. As their teacher, it is my duty to provide them with all resources needed for their success.

My Project

For the past two years, we had not been able to host our annual middle school potluck. This event allows our students to share dishes from diverse cultures and backgrounds while strengthening the core value embedded in our school's social-emotional program.

Given the social distancing guidelines in place, we are not able to host a potluck.

In order to limit the handling of food - from home to school-, we will be hosting a catered luncheon for our middle school students.

Partaking in this activity will allow students to feel some sense of normalcy within the difficult and life-changing times that they have faced.
