My Students

I teach a lively group of 7th graders in a K-8 school. Many of the students have been together, in small classes, since kindergarten, and our graduating class each year invariably refers to the school as a "family." Our small middle school (just 64 7th & 8th grade students) allows us to focus on these lively, inquisitive kids as the individuals that they are, and work to meet their varied needs.

Like all 7th graders, my students are dealing with a shift in identity; this includes getting used to their changing bodies, and they need to move around a lot.

Middle school kids need engaging curriculum and activities. They also need a physical environment that supports them as early adolescents, who are exploring the way they move about in the world.

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to think, read, learn, write, and be inspired in a comfortable environment. Instead of the traditional classroom with rows and rows of desks, teachers are testing the waters with a variety of seating arrangements. And guess what, IT WORKS! Stability balls, wobble chairs, bean bags, tiny couches, you name it. Students love it, and that's exactly what flexible-seating is about. Flexible seating allows students to have a choice in how they want to learn! The facts don't lie. Physical activity has been proven over and over again, to improve academic performance. If kids can't sit still for 8 hours straight, then maybe we shouldn't expect them to!
