Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 26 third grade students enter the classroom every day full of energy, excited to learn something new and fun. They get very bored, very quickly with reading and writing answers to boring questions in their journals.

These 26 amazing students are composed of 10 students with special learning needs, three students who are learning English, five students who are above grade level, and the remaining eight students are struggling learners.

They are making great progress this year in third grade, however get very bored. They love making foldables (paper folded in different ways) to show how they learn in different methods. It's amazing how taking a colored piece of paper and folding it can change their moods. They are doing the same work and just staple/glue it into their respective subject area journals.

My Project

The construction paper & colored paper will be utilized by the students in all subject areas to show the students strengths. They will be folding the papers to make "foldables" in order to demonstrate the requirements set forth by the school district in reading, language arts, writing, math, science & social studies. The US states flash cards will help them master the 50 states during SS. Since paper in the school is limited for copies, students need alternate ways to show they are learning. Third grade has the most stress for students in elementary school, so being creative is a necessity in the classroom. Not only will they be learning, answering higher order thinking questions, but they will also be illustrating their work, and "having fun" while learning. Since they are required to write so much, their pencils always need sharpening. The personal hand held sharpeners leave shavings and lead all over the floor, which causes more work for the custodians and the floors look awful.

Donations to this project will help improve the classroom by allowing children the freedom to show they are learning in a more hands on approach.

Their classwork can then be displayed, which makes them more proud of their work product. Students take more pride in their learning and can re-tell what they did more accurately when they have the space and freedom to illustrate, write, explain something, instead of being confined to their journals.
