This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a literacy specialist entering a classroom teaching role in a first grade classroom with two months left in the year. About half of the students are new migrants to the US from Central America and West Africa who have had interrupted schooling not just this year but throughout their lives. I am committed to getting these (incredibly sweet and excited) students to have a massive jump in foundational skills in literacy during this time. In order to do this, they need a stable, positive environment with strong routines.

The supplies I requested fall into three projects: literacy interventions, social emotional learning, and social studies.

Many of my students do not know their letters or letter sounds in any language, in addition to working on learning spoken English. I selected figurines that students can sort to learn letter sounds, whisper phones (which allow students to hear their articulation), mouth mirrors, books in Spanish for bilingual instructional support, and sign holders for literacy reference tools.

I will create a break spot for students to calm down when they have emotional difficulty. This will help manage symptoms of trauma experiences and the overall class well being. I asked for pillows, stuffies, timers, and posters for that corner. I also requested materials for mapping where students are from, and creating self portraits, to foster a culturally responsive positive environment.

In vocabulary development, upcoming scientific writing units, and social studies education, I will be using figurines as a play-based instructional tool. This will support my many English Language Learners in accessing curriculum.

I'm entering a classroom late in the year without supplies with very needy children. I will be able to make a massive difference for them with these materials. Please consider supporting me. Thank you!
