Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am currently a 7th/8th grade middle school science teacher in a high needs area. My students are English Language Learners and the classroom would benefit from these basic science supplies of student microscopes.

My students have to overcome many language barriers and learn the English language and required school concepts with little or no help from their parents.

Their parents are unable to help them in the educational area due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the English language as well as knowledge of these science concepts. My students work hard and often support their mothers and fathers by running household errands and watching younger siblings. Unfortunately, another thing that my students have in common is that their families are struggling financially. Within my school the majority of the students qualify for the state's free or reduced meal program. Due to the budget cuts schools are facing, teachers in my school are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire. Supplying my students with this material would be a small step, but it would give my students one less obstacle to overcome on their own.

My Project

My students enjoy doing experiments and visually learning. As shown over and over, students learn better when they take part in the educational process. They can only do that if they have the basics provided for them. All middle schools students are required to take The New York State Intermediate Science Exam, a two-part test that assesses both the students' skills and knowledge in the sciences. The practical, or hands-on portion of the test, requires that students demonstrate their ability to manipulate a microscope and explain what they observe. Throughout the year, the students should have multiple opportunities to practice this skill; by viewing microscopic organisms and changing magnification they will be successful on test day. However, there are currently not enough functioning microscopes to facilitate such activities. Of course, practice makes perfect, and if provided the equipment necessary to hone these skills, I believe that my students are destined to succeed.

Please support my project and provide my six 7th and 8th grade science classes with basic school supplies that most students would just take for granted.

Thank you in advance for seeking out Donorschoose and supporting kids in need.
