This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle school students at a K-8 school located in a large urban area of Connecticut. Our school is mostly a neighborhood school and I have had many older siblings of my current students. Unfortunately, our school is over 60 years old and severely lacking in supplies and modern infrastructure. We don't have a functioning science lab, so students must do all their science investigations in a regular classroom. Unfortunately, this lack of resources has a large impact on the range of opportunities that I am able to provide.

My ultimate goal is to teach students how to think and explore this world like a "real" scientist.

Like most middle school students, my kids come to science class with an ingrained sense of curiosity about the world. They love learning about living things, and the world in general.

My Project

Last year, I was very fortunate to receive 5 microscopes through DonorsChoose for my classroom. Students were able to work in large groups to share the equipment. With additional microscopes, my students will have increased access to view prepared slides, observe the structure of various cell and tissue samples, and even examine microscopic organisms collected from our local environment. They will learn about the relationship between structure and function as well as how living things are organized.

My goal is to have a classroom set of microscopes so every student is able to become physically engaged in learning life science.

Providing a hands-on experience is invaluable to the learning process and donations to this project will provide my students with continual access to one of the most basic resources for studying biology.
