My Students

"Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities..." This quote by Gloria Steinem pervades the work that occurs in theatre troupe and class. We approach every project as an opportunity to express the great possibilities of a young person's imagination.

As a theatre teacher at my school, I see over 700 students a week.

My students are full of energy, they have diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, they have diverse learning needs, and they come from every walk of life. Many of my students are current or former English Language Learners and they speak multiple languages. They are smart, inquisitive, eager, and are always excited to express thoughtful ideas through new, innovative, and artistic platforms.

My Project

This is the exciting first year of the theatre program at our school. The Theatre Troupe has been busy throughout the year creating a variety of different theatrical experiences for our audiences. We created a series of scenes to introduce our school's new positive behavior initiative to "Be respectful, be responsible, and be a role model," we adapted a Mexican Folktale into a play, and we are also working on writing and creating a movie about the trials and successes of friendship. When we had our first public performance this year, the students did a wonderful job sharing their unique creations; however, due to the acoustics of our space it was quite difficult to hear them. They were proud of the work they accomplished, but also disappointed that they weren't able to be heard. They have worked extraordinarily hard to bring their unique voices to life through play writing and acting. By having microphones they will be able to have a fuller experience of theatrical performance.

This is the inaugural year of the theatre program at our school.

As the year comes to a culmination, it is hugely important for the children of Theatre Troupe to have their stories heard through performance. Your donation will allow them the opportunity to take this huge, nerve-wracking and exciting risk in a way that is more comfortable. You will make a significant impact by empowering my students to have their words and ideas shared loudly and clearly before their peers, family and friends.
