LFPS is an economically, religiously and ethnically diverse town. We have a large population of immigrant families who benefit from the welcoming support of well-established families in town.
One of the ways our town brings everyone together is by bridging the technology gap in schools.
We recently issued one-to-one Chromebooks in our middle school. As a technology/makerspace teacher, this is a great opportunity to integrate more hands-on coding experiences to my students.
Technology brings my students together, regardless of religion or specials needs. Students who succeed help other students, and that builds confidence and relationships.
My Project
Microbits are an inexpensive way to bring coding to life in a makerspace classroom. There are plenty of block coding opportunities online, but Microbits take students' code and turn it into results they can see in real life.
Microbits takes students' coding a step further into their world, by uploading their program into a device outside their computer.
As soon as one student in class has a success, it's just amazing to see how much incentive that is for other students. They become incredibly motivated.
When I teach students to code, I am teaching them a valuable, real-world skill that may lead them to a future career.
