This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an exceptional 7-12 grade public charter school. Our students come to us from all walks of life: free and reduced-priced lunch, English language learners, special education needs, and gifted student population.

My students are middle school students embarking on their first STEM Career Exploration course.

They are enrolled in a Gateway to Technology course. They will be exploring Computer Science and Engineering Modules. Our school is a PLTW (Project Lead The Way) school. PLTW is a project-based curriculum that will allow my students to explore various STEM career pathways, by working on projects. The goal is also to encourage and recruit more girls to take advanced STEM courses.

Help my middle school explorers see and learn about this career pathway through hands-on projects and explore the vast opportunities STEM careers offer.

I am worried that the pandemic will rob my students of the opportunity to explore careers in Computer Science and Engineering. I hope to continue igniting the spark I saw in their eyes when they learned about these courses being offered at our school. The resources I currently have are not conducive to individual use.

My Project

Our school is embarking on a new journey, bringing Career Exploration courses to all our Middle School students. We have spent a year planning, training, and securing equipment and materials to begin our Engineering and Computer Science Pathway courses. Unfortunately, the pandemic has created multiple hurdles in the way of our students being able to work collaboratively on projects based learning activities. As I am looking for alternatives to keep students engaged in hands-on activities, individual kits, seem to be the way to go for now.

The Microbit cases and servo motors will be added to my student kits, so they can continue learning programming skills using the Make code software, and various sensors.

As all the students will have the same kit, they can still collaborate virtually, or in small groups (when permissible), to brainstorm and problem solve. Having 1:1 kits available will allow my students to work in a safe and healthy environment, and still have the advantage of learning through doing. The clear cases allow students to see all the components and sensors of the Microbit, while keeping these delicate components safe, for the next group of students to use. The servo motors are an integral part of micro bit projects.

I hope to keep my students engaged and curious through this difficult virtual learning experience. As students crave to work on projects, these kits will either be sent home, if we do not return to school in the Fall or will be used to practice safe, social distancing learning in a classroom environment.

The Microbit Kit will allow my middle school students to explore various sensors - pressure, photo, accelerometer, as well as buzzers and LEDs. Please support our Budding Programmers!
