My Project

y name is Brian Te. I'm a second year teacher at LHS in Los Angeles, California. At the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, we had an Intro Computer Science class without a teacher. Our robotics teacher who would normally be teaching this class had retired and we didn't have anyone else with computer science experience to cover the class. I was asked by my administration if I could teach the class next year, but after seeing the students, I felt like I could try and help out sooner.

By training, I am a Biology teacher.

I also teach Health because we had lost our instructor for that class as well. I've taken some courses in C++ and Java, but over 10 years ago. I agreed to teach this course knowing it was going to be a challenge and knowing that I had a year to prepare for it. But while I was preparing, I watched the class for this year suffer through a rotation of substitute teachers that didn't have any computer science experience. I went to my administration and asked if I could switch out one of my Health courses, which is a one semester class, and take on the Computer Science class a semester early. They agreed and I suddenly had 2 months instead of a year to prepare.

I contacted the retired robotics teacher and he said we have kits that the students can use, but they're outdated and might not work with Chromebooks we currently have. We also don't know where they are. I want to get these new Micro:bit kits for my classroom so that the class has a new set and the students can feel like they're cared for and deserve new things.
