This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are special because they blossom with imagination. I work in an inner-city school system with students whose eyes light up when they are learning computer science. I teach K-5 instructional technology and computer science in an inner-city school with a high poverty rate.

Do you remember when you were younger and you would tinker with everything?

You may have built something in your basement or taken apart something because you were curious about what it did. I want to give that opportunity to my students. All students should have the opportunity to be the next innovator. You never know who is going to create the next new piece of technology. It could be a 10-year-old kid.

My Project

My hope is that I can send home a Micro:Bit with every 5th grade student in my school. The first semester is going to be remote and I want my students to still be able to continue exploring Computer Science at home. It is so important that these students learn about all of the amazing careers that are available to them in STEM and one way to do it is by inspiring them to tinker with a Micro:Bit and explore possibilities they may not have thought of before. The If/Then website is filled with phenomenal resources that I want to use with my students to inspire them. I have found many videos that really talk about using the careers to make a positive change on society. I want the students to explore these videos and think about what they could create with the Micro:Bit that would make a positive change on society.
