Microbit Experiments

My students need microbits so they can learn about circuits, and begin to code or program the circuit boards to see how they work. The microbits are tangible, and give students hands-on experiments.

My Students

My students are from a Title I school near Salt Lake City. They are excited about using technology while they learn problem solving and thinking skills. One group volunteers to come before school four times a week to learn coding and problem solving.

Students who have a deep understanding of technology and how to use it will have greater career opportunities as they get older.

My kids are interested in learning how computers and technology work. They are very motivated to learn both how to use technology and to make it work for them.

My Project

My students have experimented a little bit with coding during the Hour of Code. Microbits are different because they are a physical manifestation of the code they write, rather than just seeing it played out on a screen.

Problem solving and creative thinking are skills that all students need.

When given a task to code for the microbit, students will need to demonstrate various problem solving techniques. The microbits allow them to code for many different outcomes including use of bluetooth, compass, accelerometers, simple digital output displays, and attaching items for input. Students in 5th grade, in particular, study electrical circuits, and that can easily be taught and experimented with using the Microbits.

Putting these Microbits in student hands will engage them in learning in new and exciting ways.
