My classroom is set in an outlying Native Alaskan school on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. Research has proven that my students thrive on place based education and hands-on learning, so I try to incorporate the natural environment as much as possible into our lessons. My school is also moving toward an even more project-based interdisciplinary approach to education.
Our little school of 75 students is located within walking distance of estuary, river, forest, and bog environments.
My Native Alaskan students come with a passion to do hands-on projects. We are a free and reduced lunch and Title 1 school.
My Project
My students will use these materials for exploring the microbe around our classroom, waters and soil. Specifically, students will evaluate bacteria growth using nutrient agar, pulling specimens from the ocean, streams, estuaries, and local soils. We will investigate the chemistry of our water and soils, looking for pollutants and healthy signs in our ecosystem. Students will create their own projects based on their interest.
The local families rely on the ocean, rivers, and forests for subsistence living.
Having these supplies will help my students better understand and appreciate the importance of conserving the environment they live in and depend on for food.
