My Students

My students are an amazing group of kids. About half of them come from our local neighborhood in West Philadelphia, and the other half from all across the city. All in all, we have students from about 40 different zip codes!

We are an urban, neighborhood school with a very large low-income and special education population.

The students here chose to come to this school because they wanted to try a different style of learning, one that is hands-on and project based.

At our school, we focus on five core values: Inquiry, Research, Collaboration, Presentation, and Reflection. Students also follow our three school rules: Respect yourself, respect others, and respect the school as a place of learning. All of our units in every class culminate in a final, student-driven project, and we strive to make our lessons and projects as real-world based as possible.

My Project

My students love programming! Last year they participated in the Hour of Code, and began to design their own games and animations in Scratch. I had to practically pry them away from the computers to learn other things.

This year, I want to take programming to the next level with my kids and dive into physical computing with the Micro:Bit.

With Micro:Bit, my students will be able to use their coding skills to create and control things in the real world. I want them to be able to complete cool projects such as making a light up interactive game, make musical instruments, and much much more!

With Micro:bits, my students will also be able to move beyond the beginner block programming language and begin to learn real world programming languages such as Javascript and Python. I want them to have real-world skills that they can apply when they leave school, and I want them to realize that technology can be incorporated in any subject, from math, to literature, to the arts. Let's get CREATIVE!
