Micro-Kitchen Enablement for Engineering Students

Help me give my students items like shelving units, utensil hangers for organized storage, a hot water pot, and a drying rack so we can learn about food security, clean up, and eat our materials.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My computer science students often hear me say, "Your brain runs on glucose!" because I notice many students are hungry and not eating at school. Sometimes students are hungry because they prioritize coveted social interaction over eating during lunchtime or they have self-parenting responsibilities and forget to pack or bring lunch or snacks to school. As a result, sometimes during instruction they feel as sluggish or irritable as does any hungry person. This condition impacts individual achievement as well as classroom culture.

This project requests resources to transform a working faucet and sink in our classroom into a kitchenette or micro-kitchen like students have seen at the tech offices of Google and The Hidden Genius Project.

Having a functional kitchenette enables me to incorporate food-related lessons into my AP Computer Science curriculum such as the famous "sunflower butter and jelly sandwich" lesson to introduce algorithms or College Board's "Food Security and Hunger" module supported by Microsoft which aligns with these big ideas like algorithms and programming, data, and the impact of computing standards.

Safely incorporating edible materials into classroom instruction supports hungry students at a Title I school to reflect on higher-order problems like globalization and systems engineering related to climate change and global food insecurity. In addition, a kitchenette can foster self-sufficiency and validates students with career aspirations or technical interests related to cooking, nutrition, or logistics and food systems.

The materials requested are organizational. I am requesting a dish drying rack, rails, and hooks for hanging utensils, safe wall-mounted shelves and brackets, airtight storage containers for dry goods, and a 3.2L Hot Water Urn Pot to quickly serve students. Many students bring instant noodles to school and often wait 15 of their 35 lunch minutes for hot water.
