My Students

Do you remember the first time you looked at a drop of pond water through a microscope? Help us set up a digital microscope lab in our middle school science classroom.

My students are 7th graders who attend a public charter school.

Our school focuses on project based learning and creating a positive environment through a social-emotional curriculum. The student body is diverse in every way. Students at our school have a voice in what we study and are eager to use scientific tools and 21st century technology. What do we do? We do projects that combine math, science and humanities. Our first project of the year involved measuring and reducing the amount of trash on our campus. In this project, students learned how to conduct a large-scale scientific study, how to use spreadsheets organize data and and how to communicate the results to our community. We have also set up an aquaponics system, hydroponic garden and tropical aquarium in our class. Currently, we are building recycling sorting stations for our school.

My Project

We are asking for a digital microscope and appropriate materials to start our digital microscopy lab. Digital microscopes would allow students to view and capture images of microscopic life, cells and biological structures. Exploring with microscopes is superior to looking at digital images because students will gain the skills related to gathering samples, preparing slides and using a compound microscope. One aspect of a digital microscope that will enhance our class is the ability to connect the USB output to the classroom projector. Students can use this feature to present their findings to the class and I can use this as a teaching tool. In terms of school projects, the digital microscope will allow students to capture images and video of their samples. This will aid in making videos, giving multimedia presentations, publishing blog posts and communicating with expert mentors online.

Setting up a digital microscopy lab is so important because it enables authentic, hands-on learning experiences that spark student interest in science.
