My Students

There is something special about small-town schools. With small graduating class sizes (my school only has one or two sections for each grade level), students tend to form close bonds with their entire class. They grow up together, from kindergarten to their high school graduation, sharing each other's joys and disappointments. In such a small town, school events turn into a community get-together for the entire area. The staff knows every single student that walks up and down the halls.

In a way, you become very much a family.

My Project

From the Motor City to the idyllic woods of the Upper Peninsula, Michigan is a beautiful state with a rich, vibrant history. This is true in literature as well, and every one of these books is set in Michigan, many by Michigan authors. With a variety of topics and genres, these books are perfect for expanding a Michigan high school classroom library and giving students more choice in their self-selected reading.

There's something special about being able to read a book that is set in your own home state.

One of the best ways for students to discover a love of reading is to have a personal connection or interest that hooks them and brings them in. The settings of these books, and the stories that take place in them, will feel as familiar to many of my students as their own backyards, hopefully encouraging reluctant readers to finally pick up that book and giving enthusiastic readers experiences that are close to home.
