Mice Are People, Too

Help me give my students a chance to watch adults HUMANELY capture and release the mice in our school. No one wants to watch a mouse suffer for days on sticky traps.

My Students

My students are fun-loving, enthusiastic scientists ready to take their learning to new levels! Our population is made up of a diverse group of learners from Brooklyn, NY, including ENL students and special education students.

My goal is to continue multi-modal, project-based learning in my classroom, where my students perform their own scientific research, build models, innovate solutions to the world's most pressing problems.

They use their knowledge of coding to enhance their presentations. My students are some of the most creative, young minds I have ever met, and are always ecstatic at the start of any new project I introduce to them. It is most important that my students understand how to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world. We analyze case studies after each unit (for example, analyzing Hurricane Sandy during our Weather and Atmosphere unit, or The Fukashima meltdown during our Nuclear Power unit) and then conduct research on their own in order to evaluate where our curriculum fits into the real world.

My Project

Glue traps are one of the most cruel and inhumane pest control products on the market. They should never be used under any circumstance for any reason.

Mice, which are intelligent mammals like us, get stuck to glue traps and wait to die, slowly, of dehydration, starvation and exposure.

The glue in impossible to move from, and instead in their days-long struggle, they rip their hair out and often will chew off their feet in a desperate attempt to break free. After finding a live mouse today on a trap, which was likely stuck through the entire weekend suffering, I committed to buying catch-and-release traps for our custodial staff to instead use in our building. Please help me fund this project so my students can learn, by watching our example, how to humanely treat the organisms that share this beautiful planet with us.
