Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

CGES is a public school located in the heart of Miami, within the borders of Little Havana. 95% of our students are Hispanic and 93% receive free-lunch. This school is very particular because it houses the Autism Academy which is the 7th center of its kind at MDCPS. It is great to be able to teach in such a diverse community. As an art teacher, I find that art is a powerful tool that helps the students communicate and learn various subjects which will help them develop their cognitive potential.

In that context about diversity is born the project Miccosukee Indigenous Textile Art, with the purpose of teaching our students about the importance of outlining the role the indigenous cultures have as people of the First Nations and their connection with the arts.

Not only will students learn about history of this country, but also about the symbolical significance that is present in the various abstract patterns of their textiles.

How will the representation of this project be achieved? First of all we will explain what materials are necessary for the relation of this art project. We will use canvas panels, pieces of canvas cloths, tempera paints, permanent markers, fabric glue, hot glue gun and poster strips (to exhibit the artworks on the school walls). With these materials we will re-create patterns used in Miccosukee textile. First the students will paint their canvas panels with the use of a single color. Secondly we will cut out three 2” canvas strips. In these strips the students will draw the designs, used by the Miccosukee artists in their textiles, with black marker and finally they will paint them. These canvas strip cloths function as the patchworks. Once finished the strips they will be glued on the canvas panels.
