I am a first grade teacher in Los Angeles. Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent are Latino (Mexican and Guatemalan, mostly), and the remaining 10 percent are a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver.

When kids are given books that reflect their own lives - seeing characters from their own culture, or hearing stories about experiences that they themselves have had - they do better in school. Research shows it and I have witnessed it myself with the students I teach. Culturally relevant teaching is a means to understand, appreciate and value people of all backgrounds. Children learn best in environments where they are accepted.

This collection of books will provide some of the emotional and educational support that children need to be successful. Your generosity will help my students appreciate diverse cultures, come to understand more about their own culture, and will help them to learn to read as well.

It is always a great pleasure for me to see students engaged in lessons that have real meaning for them. The books that you provide will form an important part of the meaningful, culturally relevant curriculum that I strive to deliver. Rest assured: your donation will make a real difference.
