Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Just like the string bass and the cello round out and deepen the sound of an orchestra, so does a bass metallophone round out and deepen the instrumental music made in an elementary music classroom. The sweet deep tones of the bass metallophone would greatly enhance our aesthetic experience.

Our school is a Title 1 school which means that the vast majority of my students qualify for free/reduced price lunches.

Additionally, most of my students are also "Limited English Proficient". This combination of severe economic and linguistic limitations mean that most of my students are at a considerable risk of not completing their education even before they begin pre-kindergarten. With this in mind, my school is daily fighting to energize and encourage our students, their parents and the community as a whole. One of the best ways that we accomplish student achievement despite our significant obstacles is by ensuring that our students have a quality instruction in music. As such it is my job to ensure that my students have not just quality instruction in music, but the kind of dynamic life changing musical experiences that may encourage my very deserving and hard working students to fight their way beyond their circumstances toward success.

My Project

I am requesting a bass metallophone with a wheeled stand for easy portability. Whenever we play instruments, the bass metallophone is the one that ALL the students are eager to play. The sound is simply lovely and soothing even for the beginner. We have lovingly cared for and faithfully used our bass metallophone that according to records left by previous music teachers is over 35 years old. The bass metallophone we've been relying on was made of particle board which after 35 years of vigorous play in music class has not just split its sides, it's bit the dust. Our bass metallophone is sadly beyond repair. Our metallophone is so completely shattered that if we called all the kings horses and all the kings men, they'd tell us to plan a funeral.

This project is important because the metallophone and stand provided through this project will enable children to play a quality musical instrument at this school for the next 35-40 years.

When things are made to last and they have served our students well, getting worn out is a wonderful consequence of good learning. How exciting to think that donation that is made to this music classroom today could benefit not only the children today, but possibly their children and grandchildren!Exciting!
