Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in District 9, South Bronx. District 9 is demographically the poorest district in the United States. Over 50% of parents are unemployed. The kids are considered a high needs population, many of them struggling with socioemotional needs, which in many occasions are the result of their living environment. I created a young men mentoring/basketball club. Students have made socioemotional, academic, and physical progress since joining the club. We are in need of basic safety equipment such as basketball socks, mouth guards, and arm sleeves to ensure safety during competition.

My Project

Students are making progress in developing social and academic skills through the use of sports to build self esteem and motivation to keep striving. The equipment will ensure the safety of the students and reduce the risk of long term injuries. Basketball and physical activity provide the students with a healthy outlet and a place to go after school. The students developed social skills by working in cooperative groups. The students set goals to achieve and strive to accomplish their goals with the assistance of the coaching staff. Research has shown that physical activity results in higher student achievement and motivation.
