Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 5th grade Dual Language teacher in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I teach all subjects in English and Spanish. Recently, I acquired a list of mentor texts to use in my classroom to get my students hooked on reading to start the new school year. As a teacher, it is very important for me to get my students interested and excited and have a passion for reading. The titles that I am ordering for my students will have them build a love for reading. My students love read aloud time because they seem to connect their prior experiences to characters in the books. I will utilize the mentor texts, such as "The Rag Coat" and "The House on Mango Street" in my classroom for the read aloud as well as during writer's workshop to model well written work by known children's authors. The mentor texts will help build a community in my classroom by connecting with similar experiences that the main characters in the texts have encountered. You can really help my students increase their love for learning in my Dual Language classroom by getting these mentor texts!
