My Students

First grade is a very fun place to be! My students are creative, curious, silly, thoughtful, hard-working learners. We like learning through hands-on, interactive and engaging projects that challenge us to think outside the box, while also trying to integrate technology into our everyday routine to prepare to be 21st Century learners.

Not everyone learns the same and being able to provide different materials and tasks that will reach every student's learning style will allow them to reach their full potential.

My Project

We have recently begun using Mentor Sentences by Jivey in our first grade classroom to help us become better writers and to also learn about grammar and parts of speech. Each week we focus on one mentor text and a sentence from that text to explore everything that makes up a great sentence such as capital letters, punctuation, nouns, verbs, contractions, etc. We study a specific part of speech or grammar element from the sentence and then at the end of the week have an assessment on what we have learned. We also use mentor sentences as guides to help us with our own writing!

We have only been able to do a few of the mentor sentence lessons because we don't have the books in our classroom or school library.

By getting a pocket chart and mentor texts such as The Teacher from the Black Lagoon to learn about adjectives or That's what Leprechauns Do to learn about prepositions, we will be use what we have learned to help us with our own writing!
