My Project

Mental Health is so incredibly important. As a School Counselor for students with special needs, I want to help them regulate their emotions and work on managing good mental health. As a part of the SEL team, I strive to give my students useful tools to help address their sensory needs and develop strong coping skills.

To give you a little background, I work with students who have a wide range of disabilities from Autism to Emotional issues and everything in between.

It is important to me to break the barriers and stigmas surrounding mental health and disabilities. Often my students' mental health is overlooked as it is typically clumped in with their disability.

Giving my students access to materials to help support their mental health would be so beneficial to their development. Children with autism sometimes need to feel weight to feel secure when they are in crisis. The Hugimals would be perfect to allow them to feel secure. Items like the Zen Meditation and Buddha are key items in teaching and practicing mindfulness and deep breathing. Other items such as calming strips and coping skills allow me to teach them how to cope with disappointment and difficult situations.

My students are special because they fight the stima of mental health and disabilities everyday by showing up to school and doing their very best! But they could really use some resources to really enhance their education. I can use these resources to teach them mindfulness, the importance of self-care, and maintaining positive mental health.
