My Project

Poor mental health in adolescence is more than feeling blue. It can impact many areas of a teen’s life. Youth with poor mental health may struggle with school and grades, decision-making, and their health. Mental health problems in youth often go hand-in-hand with other health and behavioral risks like increased risk of drug use, experiencing violence, and higher risk sexual behaviors that can lead to HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy. Because many health behaviors and habits are established in adolescence that will carry over into adult years, it is very important to help youth develop good mental health.

For our project, we are requesting a rug and other comfort items to create a class meeting space to conduct social-emotional learning and mental health awareness.

The blue chair mat, garland, and pillow will help students to feel a sense of calm and focus while we learn about the importance of mental health. In addition to that, we would like to create care baskets for students who are having a hard time. Our students have formed a group of kids who want to help other kids. They will identify students who are having a hard time, whether that be physically or mentally. They will create care baskets using the items requested in this project in hopes of letting them know they are not alone, that someone cares, and to never give up. Play-Doh and sensory fidget toys can help calm a students anxiety, while simultaneously allowing them to think clearer. The Hulken bag will allow students to easily deliver these baskets to others, since it is on wheels.
