My Project
As an educator at an Alternative School, mental health is a priority for my students. After 22 years in education, the correlation is obvious that prior trauma at home or in the community causes learning problems at school.
Students at our alternative school show the results of unresolved stress and trauma through behavior that ranges from apathy to violence toward themselves and others.
We strive to create a safe and predictable atmosphere where they can calm their overwhelmed brains, and learn. Stressed brains can't memorize or reason well.
The materials I have chosen for this grant, include journals, calming strips, a countdown timer, and flexible seating. All these items are geared toward reducing stress at school. Various resources are needed to determine what works best for each student's brain. These will be a great asset to better serve our deserving students!
