My Project

Creating art is therapy. I've noticed that when I'm able to get students off technology and engaged in a creative activity, they are calmer and they start to talk to one another. I want to show students how painting, taking photos, and making bracelets is a way to connect and unwind.

In advisory class we focus on social emotional learning.

Students are struggling with anxiety and depression at accelerated rates. This is seen even more in young women. I want students to work on paint-by-numbers, create bracelets, perler beads, and have fun with photography in order to get their minds off of social media and the negativity in the world. I want students to look forward to advisory class as a place to unwind, destress, and form connections with peers that they may not normally interact with.

I work at a public girls school in Brooklyn, NY. The young people at my school care deeply about their community, but have to deal with inequities in and out of school. Using art as therapy is a way to not only help students with their mental health, but also a way to empower students that may struggle in school. I want to help create a new narrative for students that have negative affiliations with school.
