Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

All students deserve a chance to destress and reset. These items will be available in our classroom's mental health corner, both offering a chance to destress and to connect with peers at a deeper human level. This includes stress balls, coloring books, markers, snacks for energy, happy stickers, decorate-yourself pencil cases (marked as make-up bags), and essential oils and a diffuser bring calming scents to the space.

In our class, students work on long research projects of their own design and choosing which is a great chance for them to explore current events, social justice, and issues affecting their world.

These projects take months at a time and often can be overwhelming.

Still recovering from the disruption of the pandemic, students have shown that they benefit from tools that support their mental health. Rather to distributing these items to all students, students in my class learn to self advocate for their time and space. They can use the mental health corner when they need it and then return to their work and continue learning. Sometimes this is a snack to boost their energy, sometimes its a tool to destress, like a stress ball, or sometimes its a coloring book or artsy projects, with markers and canvas pencil cases, to calm their nerves.

Additionally, the conversation games help us build connection and community. This has been shown to help address stress and feelings of anxiety and being overwhelmed.
