Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Counseling middle school students has been a challenge but it's been the best challenge I've ever taken on. My students are some of the most astounding kids I've ever met. They're phenomenal, brilliant and curious boys and girls with amazing futures ahead of them.

Self-Driven, courageous, committed and unique are just a few of the character traits they offer; they have that "tell me that I can't and I'll show you that I can" mindset.

Growing up in the South Bronx, my students have fortunately and unfortunately lived vicariously through the lives of others in their surroundings. They continue to gain insight all while learning how to "survive in the hood" in order to "make it out of the hood" as young adults. With this fearless mindset, they have become some of the most determined, sympathetic and confident young people I've ever encountered.

My Project

Coming back from such a challenging year and a half, my students will strongly benefit from having resources to rebuild and continue helping them focus on the importance of their mental health, self love, and simply growing up. During the pandemic and being remote, my students have experienced tons of changes within themselves. While this includes the changes within their growing bodies, they have also been open and honest to discuss challenges within their mental health.

Having games, books and fidgets specifically focused on social emotional learning and growth where my students voice an everyday challenge with will allow them to think outside the box and build their knowledge on how to overcome obstacles and achieve their mental health goals.

My students connect with themselves and others when using resources outside of the typical learning mindset. Card games, board games, activity books allows them to enhance their learning while also making it engaging to develop a safe space for difficult conversations. Because my counseling space will include relatable activities, my students sessions will have even more engaging conversations, laughter and strong minds as I help them grow through the use of interactive learning they enjoy. My students will continue to acquire the proper tips and skills to use when facing anxiety, panic attacks, depression, grief, low self-esteem with the Conversation Cards game. This will allow them to build and fill their tool box for a positive school year. Resources such as “my happy journal, burn after writing book, 123 I like me” game allow for my students to work in groups with their peers or individually in a counseling session. I will also use my fidgets, books and games when conducting classroom counseling sessions and teaching my students in big groups about the importance of mental health.
