Can you believe it? We have entered yet another dimension in the world of technology! Its not until something more efficient and more convenient comes along that we think of how primal we were just the week before. Remember the 4.5" floppy and how wonderful it was when we saw the day we moved on to the "smaller" more durable 3.5" floppy? Even that proved to be bothersome when it would break and you’d have to make do without the medal slide that protects the disk inside, or you’d run out of memory space and use two, may be three, disks to get the job done, or how about when it would get stuck in the A drive slot all together. Still technology presses on and we have finally (but not for long) halted to the convenience of the removable drive, also known as the flash drive. I am currently teaching juniors advanced placement language and composition on the southeast side of Chicago at Global Visions Academy. Our school focuses on international studies and technology. We believe in integrating international studies and technology in each core area to enhance global awareness and help students become technologically savvy. My kids complete a series of PowerPoint presentations, research papers, argumentative essays, responses to prose and other novels that elicit strong opinions from the students. They need to be able to save and continue working on such documents for more than one class period. It was not until I began to plan for our literary elements project that I realized the computers at my school have the Deep Freeze program. Students cannot save on the computers; once they are powered off, all saved files are erased. If they save their work on a computer that does not have the program, another student can come along and erase or move the file, which will also hinder progress. The literary elements project requires students to create a PowerPoint presentation that can be a useful tool in teaching their peers literary elements with examples of visual and written texts. This, like other projects my students encounter in my class, is a lengthy process that expands for more than a one-day period. After taking a poll, it was evident not many of my students have flash drives and often those that have them try to share with those that have not. Then you run into a host of other complications. If my students had their own flash drives, they would be able to save their work and not have to worry about losing it or whether there is enough memory. They could take their projects to the library or home if their parents own a computer. What’s even better is they can use it to save work for all their classes! At the end of the year, the students will clear the memory and return the drives with their textbooks. This way I can be sure that the next year’s incoming classes can benefit from the convenience of this modern day marvel! Please save my students from another memory meltdown. 512 MB flash drives and lanyards for them would be great and much appreciated!
