My Students

This dynamic small learning community serves students who come from all over Los Angeles county. Students are bussed into this Global Awareness magnet to get the benefit of studying in a natural community close to the beach. Some students travel 2 hours a day to get to school.

Westside Global Awareness Magnet is in its fifth year as a Global Awareness Magnet.

As a small learning community located in Marina Del Rey, WGAM served 379 students (255 in 6-8) providing a quality education with a rigorous curriculum in all core academic subject areas with an emphasis on Global Awareness. Demographics in Middle school are 18% African Americans, 70% Hispanic, 11% White and 1% Other. 84% of the student body qualifies for Title 1. I teach 6th and 7th grade students who have had much hands on science.

My Project

Students will perform dissections in class of the cow eyeball in understanding the eye. We will also perform other dissections throughout the year. Our current dissection kits are very worn, missing parts and in general disarray. Students will participate in understanding the body and do several dissections which have been funded by generous donations from other sources.

Students tend to shy away from sciences in the middle school years because of the academic rigor and the vocabulary that is unfamiliar and daunting, especially for English Language Learners and students who have not been exposed to biology and medical terminology.

Dissections are a memorable experiences for life science students.
