As a Library Media Specialists, I oversee all audio-visual equipment for my school; am responsible for curating materials, technology education and maintenance; and manage all facets of the library's day to day operation.
My entire student body receives free lunch.
A vast number are English Language Learners and many are first generation Americans. They are athletes, musicians, actors, and artists. Over fifteen hundred students walk the same halls I did. I am proud to live and teach in the same community I grew up in and where I am raising my son.
My Project
All seniors in my school must read a memoir. Our Library currently does not have any memoirs in Spanish, despite having a significant Spanish-speaking population. Through the generosity of Donors Choose, we received ten novels in Spanish.
Having curricular support in the Library for my Spanish-speaking students will help them succeed in English IV.
Studies consistently show students do better in school when they see themselves in literature. Having diverse memoirs, in both English and Spanish, assures that my students will find a book to relate to during this curricular assignment.
I want to make sure my Library is inclusive, even to those who do not speak English.
