My students need a modern desktop computer for capturing and editing videos, especially those taken with our microscopes.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Using a microscope can be frustrating. If you don't know what to look for, you could spend a lot of lost time observing blurry images, water bubbles, or cracks in the slide. This often happens to my students, which is why we need a powerful computer that, with our cameras, can record what we see!
My students are all recent immigrants to the United States for whom English is a second or third language.
They have come to the United States for different reasons: opportunity, escape from oppression, or following family here after long separations. All of them are seeking a great education and their own American Dream.
Science is a fantastic way for my students to learn English because of all of the hands-on activities we do. These create the space and a need for communicating with one another. Technology, like the computer I am requesting, can be an essential tool because it allows us to share what we have seen, and collaborate about the science behind it.
My Project
Since only one person can look in a microscope at a time, it is very difficult to share what is seen in the eyepiece. In a high school classroom where students have limited experience, I can't imagine how much time has been wasted looking at air bubbles or scratches on the glass when students should have been looking at cells!
Digital cameras have made image capture for sharing and collaboration easy. However, one still needs a computer that is powerful enough to quickly respond to the click of the mouse like a camera shutter if they want to capture movement under the microscope. In my class, we do many microscope observations of live organisms such as protists, but rarely can we capture images. By the time our decade-old computers register the "click" of the mouse, our subjects have moved on. We are limited to a herky-jerky window on the microscopic world like an imperfect stop-motion film. A powerful computer will be our microscope imaging station where any student can come to record what they see. We can even use it for individual research experiments where time-lapse video of cellular growth is needed.
With this computer, my students will have the same tools available to them that scientists have in the most basic microbiology labs today.
We will finally be able to preserve our observations so we can share them and practice speaking English about them.
