Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I serve as a student support teacher and case manager for 3rd and 4th grade students who have a range of disabilities including ADHD, Sensory Processing Needs, Autism, and Specific Learning Disabilities. In this classroom, we believe relationships and compassion form the foundation roots of learning and teaching. We accept that all of us learn and think differently and embrace the idea that all brains are beautiful and capable. Our classroom is a place where we celebrate who we are, nurture and uplift each other, empower ourselves and each other, and seek and exercise joy. We commit to a mindset of growth, lifelong learning, and advocating for what is just and right, and emotionally and physically safe.

My students love to take brain breaks or calming center breaks that involve using sensory tools (fidgets, squishy tools, stress balls) or flexible seating to help them with focus and concentration.

My hope is that this project will help them meet their needs that promote academic and emotional regulation an wellness.

My Project

I have selected the following materials for my project: 1) a flexible wobble seat, 2) a fidget toy set for kids sensory stress relief and anti-anxiety needs, 3) motivational stress balls to manage anxiety and grief, 4) sensory star beanbags, 5) bubble popper sensory toys, and 6) jumbo squishies and squeeze toys. The wobble seat will be used in my small group pull-out space to help with students who need to wiggle and move more during a lesson and to help them sustain focus on independent work. The other materials I selected will make a difference in my students' learning to help build their concentration, focus, and emotional regulation skills as well as meet their sensory processing needs in small group and whole class settings. In class, we work on understanding that all of our brains work differently and have different needs, and that when our brains feel dysregulated, we can use different sensory strategies like stress balls, squishies, bubble poppers, bean bags, and fidgets to help us feel calmer and more calibrated. Since each of my students have different processing needs, it is important that the materials I selected for this project reflect their neurodiverse needs. This project will help ensure that we can rely more on the strategies we have been learning about in class and to embrace my neurodivergent students.
