Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with two programs and groups of students. The first program is a program for at-promise minority students who are motivated, have a good attitude about learning, and earn average grades in school but can benefit from additional support and resources. The purpose of this program is to assist students throughout their high school matriculation in becoming an active and competitive students in high school and beyond. This program provides students with support in academics, leadership development, mentorship, scholarship opportunities, and cultural activities.

My students are "at promise" minority students with challenges and struggles but with the potential to succeed given the additional support and resources.

The second group of students I work with are also "at promise" minority students who struggle in multiple areas, academics, attendance, and behavior. This program is designed to provide students with academic and social-emotional support to be successful in high school and provide them with opportunities to develop their leadership skills.

My Project

There is a difference between “needs” and “wants” and sometimes those 2 may overlap. For example, a person needs food but it would be nice to have the ability to choose what they want to eat, rather than what is provided to them. It is a sad reality that not all students are able to get their physical or emotional needs met and even when they do, they don’t always have a choice in what they get. Not many students coming from a low-income community have the privilege or ability to get “wants” very often. My intent is to create a rewards system that helps meet both the “needs” and “wants” of my students.

There isn’t a one size fits all approach to students; all students have different academic, physical, and emotional needs so I believe in giving students choices and providing them with opportunities to participate in decision-making as much as possible.

My students tend to exhibit extrinsic motivation and tend to work harder if there are incentives and knowing that they will be rewarded with something tangible. I am giving my students "punch out" cards that they will get “punched” for making improvements and/or meeting certain criteria such as attendance, making improvements in their grades, and meeting certain personalized academic goals. When completed, these cards will be redeemed for gift cards. Providing students with gift cards to choose to purchase the items they need will make them feel empowered and ensure that their individual needs are met. They will have the option to buy food, clothing, hygiene items, or anything that they currently need in order to feel safe, healthy, and warm.
