This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners from a variety of backgrounds. Our school is a small public charter that focuses on character education and providing for the growth and well-being of the whole child. We are in an urban area of San Diego, CA. Our student make-up is about 80% English learners and about 95% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. There are many things stacked against these kids, but our classroom is that safe place where they spend a year giving their best effort and knowing that their teacher is pouring everything she can into them.

These kids show up each day, making the choice to bring their best, and I want to give them everything they need to feel successful in their learning environment.

These kids come with so many amazing perspectives and life experiences. They also come with a lot of needs. I have students who need to move and fidget, collaborate and team up, tune out all distraction, and find ways to calm over-stimulation all in one class. We talk about what kind of learners they are and how to be self-advocates to get the best out of their education.

My Project

My goal is to create a classroom environment where each student can figure out what kind of learner they are and become a self-advocate. I have already provided a variety of smaller items (chair bands, inflatable cushions, hand fidgets, privacy boards, etc) to help my students meet their sensory needs in our room. My students and their parents comment on what a positive difference it has made for learning and focus.

I want to empower my students by helping them make choices about their best ways to learn.

It is amazing to watch a wiggly student be able to focus on academic tasks when he is given an outlet for movement. And it is equally great to watch a student's test grades improve because she has found her focus in a quiet, distraction-free space.

I want to provide my students greater opportunities to meet their sensory needs so that they are able to reach their full potential. Things like wobble stools, exercise balls with rings, and noise-cancelling headphones can be game changers for some of my students. These tools will allow my students to release energy, remove distractions, take their choice of seating anywhere in the room, and have more control over our classroom learning environment.
