Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What was your favorite subject in school? Was it Physical Education? Besides the fact that it is fun, it helps students to learn teamwork, develop healthy habits, and it stimulates thinking. Due to NYC budget cuts, we no longer have a gym teacher and we are lacking equipment to reach all students.

We work in an ICT classroom which is comprised of 11 special education students and 19 general education students.

Our students come from low income families and resources are limited. 21 of our students are English Language Learners. Many of them have a hard time staying focused. Studies show that movement helps learning, which is why physical education is an important component of learning.

My Project

We have started to teach our students different sports skills to stay healthy and active. We started with volleyball, where we are using balloons to teach the skills. The next sport the students are interested in is soccer. We only have a few soccer balls. These materials will allow for 100% of our students to be engaged in the physical education lessons during which we will teach them basic soccer skills. We want to teach moving with the ball, passing, kicking and shooting before we learn how to play the sport. My students need 18 soccer balls and 15 jump ropes. If we have balls for everyone, all of our students will be actively engaged. These materials will be used year after year, as well as across the grades and a large amount of students will benefit.

Physical Education is extremely important.

Team sports promote physical fitness, as well as team work which is an important value to instill in children. Movement helps promote student learning. Without physical education equipment, we are very limited to how many students are actively engaged at one time and we are also limited in what activities we can do in gym.
