Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 10 bright 8th graders who are participating in an amazing program to catapult their success as young adults in high school. The students selected for this program are statistically average 8th graders. Students experienced being held back in their elementary or middle school for various reasons. However, the program does not focus on the past but rather the very bright future of our amazing young scholars.

The work we have been doing in our classroom since the beginning of February has focused on identity, empathy, collaboration and compassion.

The students enrolled have already felt the benefits of being in a loving, safe and academically rigorous environments. This program also provides socio-emotional and academic support. My students commute 1+ hours everyday from the second poorest congressional district in the United States to their new school in lower Manhattan. They have an opportunity to grow as a young adult with people their ages, experience high school ahead of their middle school peers and explore paths to their future. It all begins here.

My Project

This project focuses on students finding more about their identity. Identity is important to everyone. Young people are constantly searching for a tribe, a group, a sense of belonging. Our identities change as we grow and as we surround ourselves with people who share this identity. As humans, we strive to ground who we are in a stable place, a place to ground ourselves, a place to plant our roots. My students need DNA Ancestry testing for our exploration of our history.

We are constantly in the midst of exploration; we are exploring who we are, who we were and who we want to be.

There are parts of identity we can never change: Our Ancestry.

This project is designed to inspire young people to explore their ancestry, the cultures and traditions that run through their bloodline. We are hoping to find the ancestral foundation of ourselves and find connections we share as citizens of the world. Students will be completing a research project based on their results and presenting their findings to the class and school.
