Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has fantastic kids, They demonstrate their resiliency and dedication every day by showing up early, ready and eager to learn.

However, our kids face some daunting odds on their path toward the American dream.

100% of our kids live below the federal poverty line. 80% speak a language other than English in the home. Their parents work long hours, sometimes even working 2 or 3 jobs, but at the bottom rung of the socioeconomic ladder it is difficult for many of our parents to fully provide for their children's basic needs.

As teachers, we understand that academic success can't take place unless children's basic needs are being met. That is why we are reaching out for help for our great kids.

My Project

The mild Phoenix winters sometimes catch families off-guard when the weather turns chilly. Our desert winter mornings can drop into the 50s and 40s. Some children are still showing up to school in the morning dressed only in their uniform shorts and a polo shirt.

It's difficult to see children starting their school day by shivering as they walk to school, or having to stay inside the cafeteria instead of playing outside due to not having a jacket to wear.

Sometimes the small things can make a difference for a child: being comfortable, being able to play outside, keeping warm enough to fight off winter colds and flu. All of these things affect a child's ability to learn in the classroom.
