Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Meet The Plants" is an introduction to plant science designed to promote personal development as well as illustrate the important relationship between plants and people. Skills and knowledge acquired may be used in developing the skills necessary for entry level employment. This project opens up the world of plants to students by giving them some of the basic knowledge about plants as a foundation for more advanced study. It introduces plants grown for beauty and those that provide food, medicine and clothing that are developed through biotechnology to be used in society. The goal of this project is to use Horticulture as a means to improve individual well-being through cognitive development, psychological development and social growth. Cognitive development will involve teaching new skills, language, increase attention span and raise concentration levels and improves the ability to work independently, solve problems and follow complex directions. Psychological development involves the concept that plants depend on people for care. Nurturing skills are developed through the personal responsibility for a living plant. Successful projects encourage creativity, promote self esteem and a feeling of responsibility. Socially, the students share a common work area, and an increase in the awareness of nature. The Park City Academy is an alternative education facility located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It is an urban school in which the students are not exposed to flower and vegetable gardens. It is my goal to demonstrate the growth from seed to full grown-productive plants. The plants can be planted in a garden on school grounds, given to family or friends, or to the elderly population. The Light Cart would enable the classes to grow and nurture plants that would bring a sense of self-esteem to students and joy to others.
