Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are a portrait in diversity. As the school librarian, each year I marvel how these kids reflect the world as it should be. Each lunch period the library is filled with students who look different from each other and who are friends with each other.

The students who come to the library are motivated; they understand hard work and they really appreciate being rewarded for their work.

Most of the students come from economically disadvantaged homes; many are first-generation Americans and will be the first in their families to attend college. They love the library! They love books - real books with bindings and covers!

We need to send them out into the world prepared. Each time a child reads a book they learn about the world and about themselves. Learning is cumulative and lifelong, but we have to teach and develop the desire for learning. Books and libraries are the instruments.

My Project

Some of these students have never owned a book before, and most of them have never met an author. Gae Polisner has agreed to come to school in October, discuss In Sight of Stars, meet the kids, and inspire them. She came to Port Richmond last year and discussed her previous book The Memory of Things. The kids were transfixed, inspired and rapt. They all got to keep a book and get it autographed. It was a transforming experience.

Combining summer reading with owning a new hardcover book and the promise of meeting the author would be a strong motivation.

In Sight of Stars is only out in hardcover, and while we will not be paying for the author's visit, the students do need a copy of the book.

The copies for this project would be for the loyal members of the library's monthly book club, who read a book each month and faithfully attend meetings and discuss.
